Robert Hylen (Partner), became interested in Accounting during high school when his class advisor suggested he enroll in the Accounting class he was teaching. Rob did not really know what Accounting was at the time, but reluctantly agreed as he had an opening in his schedule. This class opened him up to the world of general ledgers, balance sheets, cash flow statements, income statements, and a little bit of tax. In other words, he was in heaven. Soon, he was patrolling the aisles with his teacher helping the other students to get their balance sheets to balance. He had also unknowingly discovered his college major.

After getting his degree at the University of New Hampshire’s Whittemore School of Business and Economics, Rob could not wait to get started. Early in his career he joined a small public accounting firm so that he could experience a wide variety of services such as auditing and tax return preparation. He was given several large clients to audit and wrap up their financial statements for preparation of not only the tax returns of the business, but those of the business owners as well. He took the CPA exam as soon as he was eligible and became a Certified Public Accountant within his first three years of public accounting.

After becoming a CPA, Rob decided to move to the private sector as a property accountant at a large property management/real estate development company in Boston. In less than one year as a property accountant, Rob was promoted to Controller, overseeing the Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Corporate, Human Resources, and Information Technology departments as well as supervising the staff of property accountants. Rob spent ten years in this field before getting the bug to go back into public accounting.

Rob joined the firm of McGladrey and Pullen in 2009 as an audit supervisor where he met his future wife and business partner Jennifer. After working together on various projects, and sharing a desk due to lack of office space, Rob and Jen decided to start Hylen CPA, Inc. in the Spring of 2013.

Initially, Rob focused on obtaining new clients and tax work while Jen focused on bookkeeping and financial statement preparation. The greatest accomplishment in Rob’s mind is to set up a new business for a client so that they can move into the world of self-employment. Hylen CPA would provide the business consulting needed to help a client succeed in the world of business and in their chosen industry. While working in public accounting, Rob worked with such a large variety of industries that he is able to bring this knowledge of how to succeed, and what to avoid, in order to be successful.

Rob’s specialties include new business setup, business tax, personal tax, budgeting, cash flow analysis, small business consulting, and tax projection. He works closely with his clients and will not rest until he has done everything possible to help them succeed. A native of Whitman, Massachusetts, Rob has a younger brother Dana and four children, Amy, Matt, Skylar, and Eli. His interests include record collecting, running, reading paper newspapers, politics, watching movies with his wife, and spending time with his family.
